Lapbook Insanity

Back in the summer, my American Heritage Girls co-coordinator and I decided it would be a brilliant idea to make lapbooks this year for all the new members. The first award that a new girl gets is called her Joining Award, and there are about 10 different requirements necessary to earn the award. We talk about all of them during troop meetings, but we thought it would be awesome for them to have a hands-on tool for learning and as a keepsake item. So for the last month, we've been mulling over ideas, doing some stapling of books—generally being rather lackadaisical about getting these done. And then all of the sudden, I had to kick it into high gear because, of course, I'm a procrastinator, and the meeting that we set as our goal is suddenly today. (OK, actually, it was originally 2 weeks ago, but it was easy to move it to this week.) I've spent a great part of the past two days frantically printing, adjusting, folding, and assembling 15 lapbooks. We wanted to present a ready-to-assemble lapbook to each new girl, so that she just has to cut, glue, write, and decorate. I finished last night about 10:30, and I think they turned out great. The real test will be when the girls start putting them together. Hopefully I didn't forget to include some vital component. Here is my finished product that Laurel and I made for a sample: The girls get a folder with directions to each individual component. The blank books are already put together; they'll just have to cut out and glue the text and pictures and do some writing and coloring of their own.

(Update: This lapbook is rather out of date now, so I am no longer emailing out the templates. So sorry!)

  18. I absolutely love the lapbook you created. My girls made these when joined AHG 8 years ago. Their troop is still using an updated version of your lapbook for Joining Award. My new troop is using it now too. Thank you so very much for the time and love you put into this. Thank you for sharing your wonderful creation! The girls keep these lapbooks and they are a treasure. You have blessed so many!
