"Wordless" Wednesday: Quilt

Finishing a quilt is, for me, a tremendous accomplishment. I'm sure I make all kinds of quilting faux pas, but it is therapeutic and the result is so satisfying. I think I've made eight quilts in the past 13 years, and this is for sure one of my favorites. (I wish I had taken pictures of the other ones, come to think about it.) My daughter and I began this quilt back in the summer for my friend's new baby, and we gave it to them a week or so ago, right before Micah's six-month birthday. (I got distracted and had to put it on hold until Christmas break!)

  1. I would have LOVED a gift like this for my third born. We did get a homemade quilt with our second son and I still have it packed away (after so many washings, it was beginning to show its age) to give him when he has his own child. It's gorgeous and a huge accomplishment.

  2. Beautiful! I started a quilt years ago in a class that I took. One of my "life goals" is to finish it! What a great accomplishment!

  3. I give a hearty amen to your very first sentence in your post. I am so there with you. I think I've made a couple fewer than 8 in the past 13 years, but I started around the same time as you.

Quilting is extremely therapeutic and rewarding. Yours turned out beautifully.

  4. This is beautiful! I'm amazed by quilts and quilters and sometimes think I would like to make one, but I really don't sew. Maybe someday, but for now I'll just enjoy the work of others.

  5. Coming from a long line of quilters (and yet the "quilting gene" has seemed to have passed my generation), this is beautiful! What an accomplishment!

  7. I feel so honored to have 2 of those quilts in our household! I will happily take pics of them for your collection.

You started me off on quilting, too. I've made 5 baby quilts, so far. So fun! Beautiful job, as usual!

  8. Beautiful! Quilting is one of the many things I want to learn some day. I'm hoping to make one for each of my kids for a wedding gift. Luckily that gives me a good long time to learn and perfect it. :) Happy WW!

  9. It's gorgeous! I've never made a quilt before. I'm not very good at sewing. Someday, when the kids are grown, I want to make them quilts from scraps of their baby clothes. We'll see if that ever happens. :)

  10. That is beautiful. My mom quilts, and I'm so thankful for the ones she has made for us. I don't think I have the patience or attention to detail to quilt! Good job!

  11. I love your quilt, and you should be proud of yourself! The best thing that you could have done was to add that border on the outside. The fact that the blocks are set "on point" makes them have the stretch of bias, and the border allows you to measure (across the middle) top to bottom, cut 2 border strips that size and apply, matching ends and center, pinning inbetween. Then remeasure (across the middle) with the side borders on and cut 2 border strips that size and apply the same way as previously done. I know that sounds like a big long pain, but what it does is, bring the quilt back into square. If you apply the borders on by just cutting a strip longer than you need, sew it on and cut it off at the other end, it continues to stretch the quilt and it will be "wavy" or rippled. Bringing your quilt back to square is the goal. It looks like you did a great job....so keep on quilting.
