Not Awkward

Our homeschooling group had a teen dance last weekend (yes, the theme was black and white). Looking through the pictures later, my overriding thought was: why were we so awkward in 8th grade, and why aren't they? Was it really all perspective? Did we just think we were awkward, but actually we looked as fantastic as my daughter and her friends?

Sadly, I think the answer is no. I truly believe that those of us who grew up in the 80s actually were awkward. We had ugly glasses, bad hair, and in upstate NY anyway, we wore Earth shoes with the GASS stamp on the bottom. The end.

  1. So is the "socialization" question based on our experiences in the '80s? ...interesting theory. I like the potential response now too:
    "What about Socialization?"

"Oh, you're thinking of your experience in the 80s, right?"

  2. I think in general today's kids/teens are much more beautiful than those from the 70s, 80s, etc. Maybe it's the hair, I don't know. But I look at kids and they are all so good-looking. Except, of course, the ones that go out of their way uglify themselves. Which is a phenomenon I will never understand.

  3. I agree. I think that a lot of the fashions were not super flattering. I see pictures of myself with my hair ratted up like a waterfall on top of my head in a polka dot dress and wonder what on earth I was thinking. :) Your daughter and her friends look beautiful!!

  4. Perhaps the awkward stage for kids nowadays is the 6th grade...

  5. 1980s-big time awkward. I see a lot of the mid to late 80s-trends starting to pop back up, especially with the boys, and I am in no way nostalgic about them. My husband has (AND WEARS!) a Vision Street Wear shirt from Jr. High that I have threatened to misplace for our entire marriage, but it occurred to me the other day, that it has gotten to the point now that it could actually be considered vintage.

Your girlies do look most lovely in that photo.

  6. They do look fabulous. And I swear I was WAY more awkward at that age than they are. It's not fair!
